Howard created one of the first change grouping systems
for ClearCase which was still in use at Sybase five years
later. He made presentation about that novel system at
the 1994
ClearCase User's Group.
At the 1995
ClearCase User's Group Howard made a presentation about
policy implementation which included techniques for
creating reliable branch-specific, project-specific,
and selectable ClearCase policies.
Howard's software engineering career began in 1981 when
he left the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
In the ten years that followed he developed major database applications
including a Material Requirements Planning system, a
critically acclaimed Network Management System,
and he designed a Health Claims Processing system.
In 1991 he joined Sybase as the first hire in their
new Engineering Productivity department, which later
became the Software Engineering Technology and Infrastructure
department. Howard took
responsibility for the SQL server's existing build system and other
parts of the Sybase engineering infrastructure. Howard
developed a nightly build and testing automation system,
still in use at Sybase eight years later.
In 1992 Howard was assigned the task of assessing Sybase's
Configuration Management requirements and implementing
a solution which could meet those requirements. He selected
ClearCase and ran a successful pilot program with it.
In 1993 Howard was a finalist for the Sybase Quality Award.
During 1993 and 1994, while still at Sybase, Howard was a
member of Atria Software's
Custom Advisory Board for their MultiSite
and ClearGuide
products. Howard contributed to the requirements definition
for these Atria products. Atria subsequently merged with
Pure Software Inc. to form PureAtria. PureAtria was later
purchased by Rational Software, Inc., who currently develop
and sell ClearCase.
Howard left Sybase in 1994 to pursue a career as an
independent consultant. He formed Timefold and developed
his highly regarded series of ClearCase seminars.
Howard's expertise with ClearCase and Configuration
Management is renowned.
Howard also Created
the ClearCase
Service Provider Index, a free index of companies and
consultants who provide ClearCase services.
Howard joined Media
in Motion in 1997 as their Vice President of Engineering
where he designed and implemented their remarkable product,
Snapsite. Snapsite
is a browser-based system for creating web sites, commerce
web sites and curriculum web sites. Howard continued to
provide ClearCase training services during that time.
In 1998 Howard used Snapsite to create the
Timefold Online Education Services web site.
This site is based on an enhanced version of Howard's
ClearCase Seminars, in a form which is convenient and
cost-effective for individuals and companies.
Howard continues to present his ClearCase Seminars
throughout the U.S.
